India's Private Space Sector Takes Off With Skyroot Aerospace's Successful Launch The Indian government's decision to open up its space sector to private enterprise has paid off in a big way, with the successful launch of a privately developed rocket by startup Skyroot Aerospace on July 18. The company's Vikram-1 rocket blasted off from the Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) Satish Dhawan Space Centre and reached an orbit of around 450 kilometers, marking a major milestone for India's private space industry.
This achievement comes just six years after the Indian government announced its plans to liberalize the space sector, and it marks the first time a private company has successfully launched a rocket into orbit in India. Skyroot Aerospace is based in Hyderabad and had previously tested its suborbital launch vehicle, Vikram-S, in 2022. However, the success of the Vikram-1 rocket demonstrates that the company has made significant progress in its development.
The Vikram-1 rocket is a full-fledged commercial launch vehicle capable of carrying 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit. It features three solid fuel stages, plus a final liquid stage powered by a 3D-printed engine that can start, stop, and restart in space to maneuver payloads into precise orbits. The rocket's airframe is made primarily of carbon-composite materials rather than metals, reducing weight considerably.
The launch was not just a technology demonstration, but also a commercial success, with the vehicle delivering several satellites into orbit on behalf of Skyroot Aerospace and other Indian startups, as well as a technology demonstration payload from German startup Dcubed. The rocket's success has given India a significant boost in its space program, and it is now only the third country in the world to have a domestic firm launch an orbital vehicle.
The success of Skyroot Aerospace is a testament to the talent, technology, and industrial strength of India's private space industry. The company's young founders, Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both cut their teeth as ISRO engineers before leaving to start the company in 2018. They made a savvy decision to hire several senior ex-ISRO scientists early on, which helped them to get the doors open within the establishment.
The company leaned heavily on ISRO in the buildup to the launch, with the agency lending its facilities and expertise to help test, fuel, and launch the vehicle. This collaboration has been seen as a model for India's reforms, with Space analyst Torsten Kriening saying that the state-enables-private-executes model is exactly what worked in America.

However, going from a single successful test launch to regular commercial operations is not straightforward. "The graveyard of small launchers is full of companies that flew once and stumbled on flights two, three, and four," wrote Kriening. "That is where failures statistically live." Nevertheless, Kriening thinks Skyroot Aerospace is taking the right approach by relying primarily on well-established solid-fuel stages and focusing on building a reliable and efficient rocket.
Skyroot Aerospace plans to use its Vikram-1 rocket to ferry paying customers to orbit as early as next year. The company has already received significant funding from investors, including $60 million in funding at a valuation of $1.1 billion. This funding will help the company to scale up production and build more rockets.
The company is also developing a more powerful rocket called Vikram-2, which will be capable of carrying 900 kg to low Earth orbit. The first flight for Vikram-2 is scheduled for 2027, and it marks an important milestone in Skyroot Aerospace's plans to become a major player in the global space industry.
While Skyroot Aerospace is likely to rely on domestic demand at least initially, Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan says the company is in a good position to compete for global customers too. Indian businesses enjoy a significant cost advantage compared to those in the West, and Vikram-1 is specifically targeted at the booming small satellite market.
The success of Skyroot Aerospace has sparked interest from other launch vehicle startups in India, including Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos and Bengaluru-based Astrobase Space Technologies and EtherealX. Whether there's enough demand to support multiple private Indian launch companies remains to be seen, but for now, it seems that the future of space exploration is looking bright for India.
As the Indian government continues to push forward with its plans to liberalize the space sector, the country's private space industry is set to play an increasingly important role.
